Robert Isaacs: Hachette Publishes Debut Novel
Hachette Book Group published CFF member Robert Isaacs’ (’02SOA) first novel It’s Hard to Be an Animal in May 2026. The novel about a man who suddenly understands animals is a magical, realist love story with elements of suspense and plenty of humor. Publisher’s Weekly’s starred review called it an “exciting and hilarious debut.” Booklist wrote, “This novel is a standout, filled with both humor and heart.” Shelf Awareness pronounced Isaacs' novel a “remarkable debut... a feat of humor, yearning, adventure, angst, and romance”.
The novel follows a lonely, conflict-averse man whose sudden ability to understand animals sends him on a wild romp around NYC. It ultimately helps him discover his own voice, the jacket summary says. Isaacs refined his short stories in CFF workshops.
Writer’s Digest profiled Isaacs, describing his thirty-year career as a Grammy-nominated musician, and highlighting his successful query letter that grabbed the attention of an agent and, ultimately, a publisher.
